Rider Haggard (1856–1925) was an English author of adventure novels, most famously the classic tale King Solomon's Mines. He was one of the earliest and most prolific authors of the genre, writing more than 50 works. Haggard was born in Bradenham, Norfolk, England and educated at Ipswich Grammar School and Caius College, Cambridge. He worked as a lawyer in London before turning to writing full-time in 1885. His first novel, King Solomon's Mines, was an immediate success, and was soon followed by She, another classic of the adventure genre. He also wrote a number of historical novels, and wrote under the pseudonyms Duke of Albany and Ralph Redcliffe. Haggard was a member of the British Royal Society, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and the founder of the British Empire League. He was also a strong advocate of the Empire and a supporter of the Rhodesia settlement. His novels continue to be popular and have been adapted for film and television several times. He is remembered as one of the most influential writers of the genre, and his works are still widely read today. Read more
